Liwa International Date Festival 2026

The Liwa International Date Festival is held annually in the Liwa oasis area of Abu Dhabi’s Al Gharbia (Western Region), around 200 km southwest of Abu Dhabi city. The 2026 edition ran 15–25 July. The festival celebrates the UAE’s date harvest season, which has deep cultural and economic roots in the Gulf region.

The UAE is one of the world’s largest date producers, and the Liwa oasis has been a centre of date palm cultivation for centuries. The festival has grown from a local agricultural event into a showcase of Emirati heritage, drawing visitors from across the Gulf and international tourists interested in experiencing a genuinely traditional UAE celebration rather than a city-based event.

What the festival involves

The centrepiece is the date auction, where premium varieties are sold by weight — some rare dates fetch prices of AED 300 to AED 1,000 per kilogram or more, depending on variety and quality. Visitors can watch the auctions, sample dates of dozens of varieties, and purchase directly from producers.

Alongside the date market, the festival includes camel shows and beauty competitions (a longstanding Emirati tradition), traditional Bedouin cultural performances including poetry recitation and music, falconry displays, and a traditional market selling crafts, spices, and local goods. Camel racing events have been part of past editions, though the specific programme varies year to year.

Getting there

Liwa is approximately a two-hour drive from Abu Dhabi city. There is no public transport connection; the only practical options are a private vehicle or a hired car. Renting a car in the UAE is straightforward for visitors with an international driving licence. The drive itself passes through some of the UAE’s most dramatic desert landscape, including the edge of the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) dunes.

What to expect in July

July in the UAE is peak summer: temperatures in the Liwa area regularly exceed 44–46°C during the day. The festival is structured with early morning events and late afternoon or evening programming to avoid the worst of the heat. If you plan to attend, start early (by 7:00–8:00 for morning sessions), rest through the midday hours, and return for any evening events. Light, loose, breathable clothing, high-factor sunscreen, and significant water intake are non-negotiable. This is not a festival that works well for casual visitors unprepared for the conditions.

Staying nearby

Accommodation options in the Liwa area are limited. The Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort (approximately 60 km from Liwa) is the most well-known option in the broader region, though it is at the luxury end. Budget and mid-range visitors typically stay in Abu Dhabi city and make the trip as an early-morning day out, returning by afternoon.
