UAE National Day 2026

UAE National Day marks the founding of the United Arab Emirates on 2 December 1971, when six emirates — Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah — united as a federation under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Ras Al Khaimah joined in February 1972. The 2026 celebrations mark the 55th anniversary of the union.

National Day is a two-day public holiday (2–3 December) and one of the most significant dates on the UAE’s calendar. Celebrations take place across all seven emirates, though the largest and most spectacular events occur in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

What to expect

The signature event is the official military and civil parade, typically held in Abu Dhabi as the federal capital. The parade features armed forces units, government vehicles, and cultural floats, often followed by a Presidential address. The Abu Dhabi Corniche hosts large public gatherings around the parade route.

Fireworks displays take place across both Abu Dhabi and Dubai on the evening of 2 December. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Abu Dhabi Corniche area are traditional launch points, drawing large crowds. In Dubai, the Dubai Creek area and JBR waterfront also host displays.

Beyond the official programme, National Day has a strong grassroots atmosphere. UAE residents decorate their cars, homes, and offices in red, white, green, and black — the national colours. Overlanding convoys of decorated vehicles are common on the highways between cities in the days surrounding the holiday. Shops, malls, and businesses participate with national-themed promotions and decorations.

Experiencing the celebrations as a visitor

National Day is one of the most accessible UAE celebrations for tourists. The fireworks are free to watch from public areas, and the general atmosphere of national pride is welcoming. Viewing positions for the fireworks fill up early — arriving at least two hours before the displays is advisable, especially in Downtown Dubai near the Burj Khalifa.

December 2–3 is the heart of the UAE’s tourist season, with pleasant temperatures around 22–26°C. Transport is busier than usual; the Dubai Metro runs extended hours but expect crowded trains around the fireworks displays. Taxis will be harder to find late in the evening near major viewing areas.

Practical notes

Government offices, banks, and some businesses are closed for both days. Major malls, tourist attractions, and restaurants remain open and often run National Day promotions. The Burj Khalifa observation deck and popular attractions may have reduced online availability on these days; book tickets in advance if you are planning to visit.
